What is Over-Dimensional Transport?
Freight is commonly considered over-dimensional or oversized when the dimensions of it exceed the rules and regulations of any given province, territory or state. Dimensions such as height, width, length and weight are all contributing factors when determining if a load is over-dimensional or not.
In British Columbia for example here are some (but not all) of the more common vehicle and load dimension limits at which point, if exceeded, permits and other provisions are required to safely and legally carry out the transport process.
- Vehicle Height – A person must not, without a permit, drive or operate a vehicle having a height in excess of 4.15 m.
- Vehicle Width – A person must not, without a permit, drive or operate on a highway a vehicle having a total outside width in excess of 2.6 m
- Vehicle Overall Length (Tractor Semi-Trailer Combination i.e. trombone or expando trailer) – With single or tandem drive tractor Max 23.0 m or with tridem drive tractor Max 23.5 m.
- Vehicle Weight – Maximum Gross Combination Vehicle Weight (GCVW) of combination noted above is 57,100 kg.
Over-Dimensional Requirements
Once a vehicle combination and load are deemed oversized or over-dimensional there are a number of requirements that must be followed in accordance with local jurisdictions. JT HOTSHOTTING specializes in fulfilling these requirements in order to comply with local laws and get your freight to where it needs to be safely and reliably. When you hire us to move your over-dimensional freight we will be responsible for route planning, permits, coordinating plans with hydro crews, pilot cars and traffic control.

As such, our fleet of trucks and trailers has followed suit in accordance with these needs. We offer over length and over height transport services using our hi-boy and lowbed trombone (expando) trailers in concert with our heavy haul spec tandem and tridem drive tractors. We also employ a 9ft wide 53’ step deck which is great for loading wide freight side by side to maximize deck space but without the concern of having over hang.
